In-N-Out Will Become Even More Popular By Switching To Antibiotic-Free Meat

In-N-Out, the mega popular Western U.S. fast food chain, is known for its delicious burgers and secret menu, as well as being a popular late night spot for the likes of Drake, Steph Curry, and other celebrities. Now the burger chain has announced an important change to its ingredients — it will no longer use beef that has been treated with antibiotics.

According to Reuters, various food safety activists are pressuring In-N-Out to stop using this kind of meat, out of fear of “superbugs,” or antibiotic resistant bacteria that can end up on these patties. In response to this pressure, the company’s vice president for quality, Keith Brazeau, said that the chain has urged suppliers to not use antibiotic-treated meat: “Our company is committed to beef that is not raised with antibiotics important to human medicine and we’ve asked our suppliers to accelerate their progress towards establishing antibiotic alternatives.”

Drake and friends might rejoice at this step, except that there’s no timeline yet as to when these suppliers will make the switch.

Antibiotic-treated meat has been a big issue when it comes to food safety. The Washington Post reported on a Consumer Reports study that found that there were twice as many superbugs on antibiotic-treated beef than the non-treated variety. In addition, some of this beef had a strain of bacteria that produces a toxin that proper cooking can’t destroy.
